Last night I went to Sankeys in Manchester for the first time. Its a world renowned club (5th best in the world according to DJMag) in what used to be a soap factory in Ancoats. Its in the middle of nowhere and a bit of a walk out but I had to try it before I leave. I've got mates who go on the Friday and Saturday most weekends and absolutely rave about it but I've just never been. I like some of the people who go, and I love the music, but I'm not really into pills and all the drugs they are, I hate the idea of sunglasses inside, bad pictures, and random dickheads so I've stayed away until now. Ended up going I think mainly because all of the said people were at Creamfields so I'd be able to make up my own mind about it and there'd be less pressure on.
I went with Jack, Claire and Danbo, and we were with some of our Cheltenham mates from Benicassim. They'd come up because one of the DJ's who was playing is one of their brothers so we made a night of it. We all met at Claire's for drinks before hand and got a minibus into town. Si O Connor, the DJ we were with had to get to Sankeys for 10 which was a bit early so the rest of us got out and headed to Trof in the Northern Quarter which is a pretty cool place, really chilled out and laidback which I liked. I'd never been there before either so it was a night of new things really.
While we were sat there we got a text off Si, He'd got all of us on the guestlist so we all saved a tenner each which was really good. We got in and Si was about to start in the bar. He was one of 3 DJs on there that night, and was 2nd on. I really wasn't expecting anything because of my experience with friends who claim to be DJs, and he'd been really quiet at Claires. But when he got going he was absolutely incredible. The bar was rammed, all the other DJs came and watched and were loving it, he was there with this grin on his face doing really good. There were some free CDs of him and the other DJs at the front on the booth so I grabbed a couple and have been listening to him all today. Its mainly minimal and techno / house sort of stuff which I like a fair bit so its really good. This is one of his..
Si was on for about 2 hours and he absolutely nailed it, afterwards we all headed out to the terrace for a bit of a chill. Made friends with a German girl who's been facebooking me today haha. Me and Dan headed inside with her mates and watched some of the DJs in the basement who were all quality. One of them did this trick where he got everyone to crouch down like they were bowing to him, and built it up for ages. It was killing us.. really tense, then when the song dropped, everyone stood up and started going crazy. It was wicked. A friend had told me when he'd done it and I had been pretty unimpressed but it was incredible.
After a bit Dan's ex girlfriend turned up so he got a bit uncomfortable and I ended up getting a taxi back to his with him a bit earlier than I would have liked. We got an alright deal which was OK I guess, but I wish I could have stayed a bit longer. Guess I'll just have to go again!
We got in and I fell straight asleep. I was absolutely shattered.
Also learnt a valuable lesson yesterday, never leave your car unlocked. I thought I'd locked it on Saturday night but aparrently not. Someone had come and been through my glove box and taken all of my change! One of the doors was closed but not sealed if you get me, and the boot was the same. They must have been worried the slamming would wake me! Its a good thing there was nothing of value in there, a very narrow escape!
