I have today bid adieu to my house guests. They were two girls, Ornella and Josefina from Mars De Plata, Argentina. We met them on Tuesday night and so to get to know all of the touring Argentines we went out to TGI Fridays for a meal before taking them home.
During the days they were out visiting so my time with them was limited. On Wednesday they visited Liverpool, Chester the next day and then they left this morning for their next hosts in Edinburgh. Their tour didn't include any visit of Manchester because it "lacked historic significance" according to their teachers! Incredible! When I found this out I suddenly got all proud and patriotic so I drove them into the city and showed them the sites and Old Trafford because they were Manchester United fans (surprise surprise!!). Its a long story but they both ended up sleeping together in my bed because they wanted to be in the same room and the shower makes noises in the spare room so I had to go in there. They were good friends so I don't think they minded, and I think for girls its ok. I share beds with my mates after nights out sometimes so I wasn't about to judge them! ![]()
I learnt Argentines are very proud people.. both girls refused to let me pay for their TGI meals and started getting quite aggressive haha, and on their last day one of them went on a huge rant about how ignorant Americans and British people are. I think it was because I didn't know Spanish (despite doing it for a year in lower school) and they had to speak English all the time to me. I had no idea how stubborn and bitter (maybe not the right word) they were about that sort of thing, because when I was in South America my Chilean hosts loved us English, and my Argentines either spoke very little English or just plain ignored us (the last guy was a rich snob.. wanker).
They also seemed to pick out the bad points of Britain and carried on talking about how good Argentina was and comparing everything to stuff in Argentina which was invariably better than over here. That kind of got to me a bit.. when I was in South America I tried to not compare and just take everything for what it was which I think my hosts appreciated and is generally a better attitude for travelling.
I tried my best to make a good impression, I was as nice as I could be alone with them and when our schools were together they went with their friends and I went with mine so it was ok. It was hard though because they were kind of shy and I don't really have any girl stuff to do at my house so we didn't bond as much as I'd wanted.. looking back now I think I wish I had boys because I could have just played FIFA with them or something and it would be easier to get along. I kind of felt I had to tiptoe around and give them more space than I would have with a lad. I drove them around (got through a tank of petrol in 4 days!!) and bought them alcohol which went down well but I still kind of got the impression they didn't like me as much as they liked the other English boys. They didn't eat breakfast, took a long time getting ready and shopping, which I know is typical for girls but it was doing my head in. They were also a bit dry when it came to going out.. everyone else went out into Manchester on their last night but we couldn't because one of my girls flat out refused because she had a "prickly throat" so I was pretty annoyed as apparently it was a great night and I wanted to go but there will be other chances.
I was a bit nervous at hosting for the first time but it was all went not too badly overall. This post sounds bitchy but most of the time it was very pleasant. They were nice enough girls, my mum and sister loved them, but I suppose it was just a bit of a guest-host mismatch. I was a little nervous at hosting for the first time but at least now I know more for next time if the chance comes up again.
Now I am absolutely shattered and kind of relieved they are gone because I can get back into my room. We said goodbye today, we gave them some local goods for presents and they gave us Argentina keyrings which was nice, I've added them on facebook but I doubt I will ever see them again.
I did try though and don't regret having them here at all! ![]()
